Are you confident your current knowledge and experience meets the standards expected to become licensed?

MLSA's Skills Assessment service is designed for people who want to find out what's needed before applying for a contractor licence, giving professionals an opportunity to assess their existing knowledge, identify areas for improvement and better understand where further training or professional development may be required for them to become licensed.

During the assessment, MLSA will explore your knowledge across areas, including:

• legislative and regulatory responsibilities;
• Work Health and Safety requirements;
• technical construction knowledge;
• relevant provisions of the National Construction Code and Australian Standards;
• Obligations related to contracting work including contractual requirements
• practical knowledge relevant to the type of work you currently undertake or intend to undertake.

MORE THAN JUST A TEST

The purpose of the Skills Assessment isn't simply to determine what you know, it is about planning your career.

We will do the following:

1. Teach you about the licensing process - our service explains the difference between contractor and supervisor, the importance of working within the conditions of a licence or registration, and how the requirements apply to sole traders, companies and nominated supervisors.  
2. Find out about your strengths and weaknesses - MLSA will provide direct feedback on areas where your knowledge is strong and highlight any deficiencies that may require further training, experience or development. This not only gives you a clearer pathway to licensing, allowing you to focus your time where it will provide the greatest benefit, but also help you determine how you wish to progress your career.
3. Upskill you - Importantly, the skills assessment provides valuable knowledge on regulations specific to your trade. This knowledge will help you during a licence interview, the most critical step in becoming licensed.
4. Determine if you are 'licence ready' - at the completion of the assessment, you will know whether you are ready to become licensed. This will come in the form of verbal and written feedback.
