Landscaping is a rich and rewarding career where no two days are the same, and you get to make the most of the beautiful outdoors. And let's be honest… the grass will be greener on your side!

Getting into the great outdoors, getting your hands dirty, working hard and keeping fit are all part of being a landscaper. Let alone knowing about plants and designing and creating natural or man-made masterpieces. So why not get paid to learn?

Undertaking an apprenticeship or traineeship allows you to learn real skills in the workplace, become qualified in a trade or vocation and be paid a wage while you're learning. You'll enter into a training contract with an employer and a training provider that will allow you to combine hands-on training in the workplace with off-job study in a classroom or workshop.

When you take on an Apprenticeship, you'll:

  • Earn while you learn both on-the-job and at a Registered Training Organisation
  • Gain fundamental skills you'll use long after you're qualified.
  • Access potential Government financial support and personal benefits.


  • Find an Employer. How? Have a look for Apprenticeship opportunities on the MLSA Employment Hub, look on Seek, or contact your local TAFE.
  • Do a work trial with them for two weeks (to see if you like working for them and you like the work. The two weeks can be recognised as time served in your apprenticeship. This is the maximum time an apprenticeship can be backdated.)
  • Once you and the Employer have agreed to employ you as an Apprentice, the Employer needs to contact an Apprenticeship Network Provider:
    1. MAS National – 1300 627 628
    2. MEGT – 136 348

The Apprenticeship Network Provider Centre will come to your workplace, and you will complete a Training Agreement. You will agree to work for the Employer as an Apprentice, and the Employer agrees to train you and register you with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

Once this agreement has been completed and signed, the RTO will receive all of your and your employers' details so they can contact your Employer to get you enrolled for Trade school (which typically you will attend one day per week).

The RTO will contact you to complete a Basic English and Maths assessment. The assessment helps the RTO identify areas where you may need additional support to help you achieve your goals.

The RTO will then enrol you in the Units of Competency email you and your Employer the start date and timetable.

Once you have completed and passed all your units of competency (typically in 3-4 years), the RTO will inform your Employer. Your Employer will then decide if you are competent on the job in all the units (referred to as 'signing off' your apprenticeship).

Once you have been signed off as competent, you will be awarded your certificate and have your trade qualification!
